POIESIS: Philosophy Online Serials (or POIESIS) is an aggregated bundle of academic journals and series hosted by the Philosophy Documentation Center. It was established in 1996 in cooperation with InteLex Corporation, in an effort to make journal content from many sources available online to libraries without increasing journal subscription rates.
The collection includes two sets of publications: a core set available to all subscribers and a set of optional titles only available in conjunction with a print subscription. The core set contains a fixed number of issues from 27 journals and series. These are generally complete sets or back issues. Another 36 journals or series are avaailable in the optional set, and this set includes both current and back issues of each title.
A library that subscribes to POIESIS gets access to all titles in the core set, but must also have a current subscription to any journal in the second set to gain access to that title. This subscription requirement made it possible for these journals to offer online access without increasing their subscription rates to cover the cost of the new service. The POIESIS bundle is not available to individuals.
In 2009 Philosophy Documentation Center launched its eCollection offering more publications and a broader range of online access options for institutions, individuals, and membership organizations. POIESIS is maintained by Philosophy Documentation Center for institutions as one of several options for electronic access to philosophy journals and conference proceedings.
